In our work at the Centre, communication has repeatedly emerged as a key issue for our clients. Communication is a continuous two-way process between people with cancer, their family and friends and the cancer team caring for them.
This booklet was written to assist both people affected by cancer and health professionals to communicate effectively so that needs are met and care is provided more sensitively.
"I would have found this of enormous help when I was first diagnosed with cancer" - Centre user
"The handbook would have given me the confidence to ask questions until I was happy with the answers" - Centre user
" The simple but unpatronising language, free of medical jargon, will make it easy to absorb information when your mind is in a whirl" - Centre user
This handbook was funded by Macmillan Cancer Relief and the Department of Health.

This booklet explains the Centre's history, ethos and the services that have been developed. While the Centre has pioneered a community- based approach to cancer support, most of the activities can be provided in other settings such as hospitals.
There are chapters on key therapies including counselling, massage, relaxation and visualisation, and the Information and Home Visiting Services. Other chapters describe the Centre's collaborative partnerships, monitoring, evaluation and funding of its services and evidence of the effectiveness of psycho-social interventions.
The booklet provides a unique and in-depth examination of how a community-based cancer support centre works and the benefits to users. Essential reading for those setting up new services.
"I'm full of admiration for the Centre's underlying ethos, and for the clarity and simplicity of this booklet. All streets ahead of most of what's available"
Julie Friedeberger, yoga teacher and author of A Visible Wound - A Healing Journey through Breast Cancer

New edition - 2005
Massage can be of great value for people with cancer. Benefits include reducing muscle tension, pain and blood pressure; increasing relaxation and calmness; improving body awareness and self-acceptance, and releasing tensions buried in the body.
This booklet reports on the pioneering study carried out by Patricia McNamara for the Centre. Her survey of massage therapists and doctors resulted in these guidelines for safe massage for people with cancer, who can now enjoy the benefits knowing that their therapist is aware of any potential hazards.
"... a superb overview ... readable and timely ..." -
Professor Karol Sikora
